Shakeela is a popular Indian adult film actor. Away from the mainstream genres, she has been a known face in the South Indian adult film industry, or ‘The B-grade industry,’ since her early years in films. Growing up in a huge middle-class family, she faced pressure from her parents to start earning at a very young age. She started her film career at the age of 20 with the Tamil film ‘Play Girls.’ She played a minor role in the film - that of Silk Smitha’s sister. She slowly overtook Silk Smitha’s popularity as a South Indian adult film actor, and appeared in over half a dozen films every year during the 80s and the 90s. Apart from Tamil films, she also appeared in many Kannada and Malayalam films and carved a niche for herself in the industry. At one time, she was so popular that film producers started naming their houses after her. Her first major Malayalam hit, ‘Kinnarathumbikal,’ brought her immense mainstream fame. Subsequently, she appeared in many successful films, such as ‘Love U Alia’ and ‘Guru Sishyan.’ Many of her films gained international reputation, and some of them got dubbed in Chinese, Nepalese, and Singhalese, among other languages.
Shakeela did not shy away from doing bold topless scenes in some of her earlier films. However, once she earned mainstream success, she frequently said no to such scenes. Following this, body doubles were used in many of her films.
Shakeela was hugely popular with the Malayalam film community and her male audiences loved her. She claimed that she was deluged with marriage proposals from more than 100 filmmakers and actors, at the peak of her career. A few filmmakers and film producers were said to have gone as far as naming their homes after her.
Shakeela, for the longest time, had been the center of curiosity for many, owing to very limited public knowledge about her background. Her autobiography gave a detailed insight into her early life.
